What would someone do if faced with a limited time to live while burdened by personal struggles and unfinished business? That’s the central question explored in this film, a collaboration between Spain and Mexico, expertly directed by Alejandro González Iñarritu. The story unfolds in Barcelona, and its protagonist, Uxbal, is a questionable character entangled with organized crime—certainly not someone easily embraced as a hero. Aside from his struggling illicit ventures, which are continually hampered by various difficulties, Uxbal has a wife battling alcoholism and bipolar disorder, essentially living apart from him, and two children who represent the genuine happiness in his life. The film is thought-provoking and confronts challenging, difficult, and intricate themes. I’m not sure I would suggest it to someone looking for an easy watch, because I believe it requires a specific mindset to fully appreciate. It's not designed to be simple or elicit immediate sympathy, although the portrayal of his suffering ultimately achieves that effect—we see past his actions and words to recognize a decent person underneath. Nevertheless, it’s a somber film, leaving viewers with a sense of hollowness and disappointment. This project provided Javier Bardem with a role and script perfectly suited to his talents and abilities. It's well-known that Iñarritu intended for him to be the lead from the beginning, and Bardem delivered with a level of dedication, skill, and professionalism evident throughout. His performance is outstanding, deeply emotional, and truly remarkable. The supporting cast also delivers strong performances, including Hanaa Bouchaib, Guillermo Estrella, and Maricel Álvarez, but it’s Bardem's dominant presence that captivates and carries the entire film. From a technical standpoint, I was particularly impressed by the quality of the sound design and effects, along with their skillful implementation. The best aspects are evident in the finer points—like the lack of echo, clear audio, well-chosen sound effects, or even moments like hearing the heartbeats of two actors during an embrace. Furthermore, the visuals, cinematography, and editing also deserve recognition.
