It’s an agreeable film that I could see myself watching once more and would suggest checking out, particularly for those who like survival stories. While I do have some reservations about the technical aspects of this movie, the core idea is engaging enough to warrant a viewing. It's questionable whether many viewers will want to watch it repeatedly, though. The casting is excellent; Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich both convincingly play unlikeable characters in distinct ways, supported by several other actors who perform well or better than adequately. Given that most of the film unfolds within a single house, the filmmakers did a good job keeping things engaging, introducing some varied locations along the way. There’s a city shown with impressive detail amidst all the unfolding disorder and a river that manages to feel both vast enough to inspire a sense of being lost and also confining in its limitations—it's a movie that presents itself well visually. My main issue lies with the narrative construction, not the writing itself. The dialogue and story developments are strong, but the unnecessary insistence on rearranging events and failing to gain any advantage from it is just frustrating. The latter portion of the story is interwoven with the earlier part, causing a back-and-forth progression. It’s strange how someone would tell a story like that, jumping ahead three-fifths of the way through, then returning, and then repeating what's happening when you reach that same point again. I may watch it again sometime, but I suspect I won't truly appreciate it until I sit down and put everything in chronological order.
