Dustin Hoffman portrays "Dutch," a man hoping to become a gangster in 1930s New York City. With the help of “Otto” (Steven Hill) and the charming “Bo” (Bruce Willis), he attempts to build his own criminal enterprise. As they operate, “Otto” finds a promising young man named "Billy" (Loren Dean), who joins their group and learns that while there’s wealth and chance available, it comes with a dark, violent, and hazardous reality. The film presents an accurate depiction of the era, complete with vintage cars and stylish clothing, but unfortunately, the storytelling itself is quite unexciting. Willis has a limited appearance (though I appreciated his shoes), and Nicole Kidman provides romantic interest for both Hoffman and Dean at different points. The story feels disconnected; it progresses in short, separate segments that don’t create any real feeling of danger or threat, leading to a conclusion based on historical events that ultimately disappoints. It's not anyone’s best work.
