It’s true that as a kid growing up in the 1970s, I read a lot of "Biggles" books. The order of events didn't always make sense, but the thrilling escapades of Biggles and his companions were enjoyable reading for a young boy. However, it seems much of what Capt. W.E. Johns wrote needed a child’s imagination to truly come alive; adapting it to film doesn't quite work. This isn't so much a "Biggles" movie as it is about “Jim” (Alex Hyde-White), who finds himself in time-traveling situations while visiting London, and becomes involved with "Commodore Raymond" (Peter Cushing) and our hero (Neil Dickson) as they attempt to stop Bosch’s scheme to deploy a sonic weapon during World War One. It's an okay story, with serviceable special effects and enough aerial combat sequences, but the efforts to bring these characters into the 1980s don’t really pay off. The qualities that made the book characters appealing feel almost like they are being mocked here, and despite a scene set in a convent where young “Jim” stubbornly refuses to be separated from his small towel secured with Velcro, the rest of the film is fairly forgettable. I can't imagine these stories will ever be revisited—they aren’t exactly appropriate for modern sensibilities, even in accepting homes; it’s disappointing that this uninspired attempt will likely be his only appearance on screen. Even Peter Cushing’s presence isn’t enough to elevate it above the question of why anyone bothered with it at all.
