I’ve watched a lot of Bigfoot movies—easily close to twenty over time—and among my favorites are films like “Sasquatch Mountain” (also known as “Devil on the Mountain”) and “Exists,” with “Primal Rage” and perhaps “Abominable” also ranking highly. "Sasquatch Hunters" has its moments too, and I’d put it somewhere in that general tier. The film begins much like many monster-in-the-woods stories do—similar to “Man-Thing” or the more recent “The Texas Witch.” Fortunately, there's a sense of depth here; the movie seems intent on taking itself seriously and attempting to be genuinely frightening. It does manage to create some horror, and I appreciated that the characters weren’t hurried through their story arcs. I’m referring specifically to the former Army ranger, played by Kevin Makely, and the older recluse he joins forces with, portrayed by Todd A. Robinson. Lance Henriksen appears in a brief role near the end; this marked his fourth Bigfoot movie overall, following “Untold” (also known as “Sasquatch”), "Abominable," and “Sasquatch Mountain.” Amanda Wyss and Adrienne Barbeau also have small parts. My main issue is that the film felt too bare-bones and could have used more engaging elements. Consequently, it can be a bit dull at times. There’s also an unnecessary scene toward the conclusion that suggests a potential series continuation, but that never came to pass, likely because the movie didn't generate enough enthusiasm. This was writer/director Justin Lee’s debut feature film. He released three more direct-to-streaming movies later in 2018, including the very good Western “Any Bullet Will Do.” Five years on, he delivered "Hunting Games," which shares similarities with this one—armed men facing a desperate situation in the forests of the Northwest—but is noticeably better, indicating his growth as a filmmaker, using this project as a foundation. His skill seems to lie in capturing effective footage in wilderness settings and developing characters through realistic, everyday conversations. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 29 minutes and was filmed in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest area of Washington, including Lewis River Falls. GRADE: C+
