Wayne’s most brutal western tells the story of a man who comes back to his family after his grandson is abducted by a vicious group holding him for ransom. The film follows their quest as he joins forces with his two sons and an altered Bruce Cabot to get the boy back. Richard Boone gives a remarkable performance portraying the villainous leader of the kidnappers, radiating menace throughout. While the movie has some shortcomings—the soundtrack feels forced, and there’s something about the visuals that suggests it might have been recorded on video instead of film, with less-than-ideal color and lighting—it remains an enjoyable and thrilling experience, complete with moments of levity and a strong lead performance.
