Following the war, financial hardship grips Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani), so when an opportunity arises for some extra income, he takes it. The problem is, he needs his bicycle to do the work and it’s been stolen. Accompanied by his young son Bruno (Enzo Staiola, who delivers a wonderful performance), he begins what seems like an insurmountable search to recover it. What follows are several incidents as this father-and-son duo meets various citizens—some more supportive than others—during their small undertaking. This is a compelling look at people, focused on something seemingly ordinary like losing a bike, but the ripple effects of that loss on their lives and relationship, alongside the impact on their ability to earn a living and maintain their dignity, are skillfully presented by De Rica, who slowly draws you into their experiences. The straightforward nature of the story also allows for an examination of the poverty experienced by many residents (like those attending mass in hopes of receiving soup rather than contemplating spiritual salvation, for instance). Young Staiola’s acting is superb; he portrays the boy with a remarkable sense of authenticity—his character doesn't fully grasp why this bike holds such significance or why its disappearance is causing his father to act so erratically—but like a devoted pet, he continues to assist, even ultimately resolving the situation. The film's locations in this historic city contribute significantly to the feeling of hopelessness – ruins (both ancient and modern) – and you occasionally find yourself wondering if life has truly progressed much from Roman times. The film’s tempo is very well controlled; the script contains moments of humor and joy, and the narrative builds consistently toward a conclusion that is surprisingly touching and left me with a sense of satisfaction. However, the central question remains: does he manage to locate his bike?
