It’s fitting that Ms. Davis would portray herself in this movie. Being her final film with Warner Brothers, the studio gave her a wildly theatrical and somewhat ridiculous project, but surprisingly, it's quite entertaining. The script is full of witty remarks and memorable lines, including one of the most recognizable quotes in American movies ("What a dump"). Bette Davis delivers an exceptionally over-the-top performance, complete with a long wig and revealing costume, really going for it. She’s delightfully unpleasant, and as Elizabeth Taylor once told Richard Burton in "WAOVA," she embodies discontent—essentially, she's a woman who “buys things.” In this film, her character purchases a ticket to Chicago, then applies heavy makeup, which seems like a precursor to her role in "Baby Jane." If you appreciate exaggerated acting and the work of a legendary performer seemingly determined to damage her own career, this is essential viewing.
