Robert Ryan delivers a compellingly threatening performance in this drama about an isolated man ("Wilton") who accepts employment as a general helper at the residence of the kindhearted, recently bereaved "Helen" (Ida Lupino). He’s plagued by a paranoia that makes him feel targeted by everyone – and the film's unsettling initial moments suggest he might be right, keeping the viewer on edge. As she finds herself alone with him inside the house, with all entrances secured and the phone disconnected, concern for her well-being grows. Ryan occasionally gave stiff performances, but in this instance, he skillfully brings a depth of psychological complexity to his character’s menace, going beyond mere physical intimidation. Harry Horner succeeds in creating a palpable sense of danger, broken up by occasional visits from children who could potentially provide an escape for her from what feels like a domestic imprisonment. The resolution is also noteworthy—it deviates from typical expectations. Lupino and Ryan have good chemistry together, making it a worthwhile viewing experience.
