It's been a decade since the first installment, and this feels like a weak imitation. The familiar actors are missing, which significantly diminishes the spark between them; Eddie Murphy returns as the boisterous police officer "Axel Foley," but it feels forced. While it includes elements that contributed to the franchise’s earlier success, the noticeably lesser-known supporting performers and the recurring style of action sequences simply don't function effectively. “Foley” has a few lines intended to be funny, yet even Murphy seems unenthusiastic as his character becomes entangled in a counterfeiting operation based within an LA theme park. This plot device allows for some weak jokes, and the writing feels more abrasive than before; what was once cleverness is now crude. The film lacks any real sense of danger regarding how things will conclude, which is typical. Someone likely profited from this derivative project, so it’s to be hoped that further installments are avoided before the reputation suffers even more.
