A follow-up to the popular 1984 movie was probably going to happen eventually, and Tony Scott did succeed in bringing back most of the original cast while also getting Jürgen Prochnow ("Dent") on board to play the villain, taking over Steven Berkoff's part. The film largely mirrors the first one; Eddie Murphy’s "Foley" is paired again with "Ashton" (John Taggart) and "Rosewood" (Judge Reinhold) as they investigate an attempt on the life of their friend "Bogomil" (Ronny Cox), who had been put on hold because he wasn't making progress against what are called “alphabet crimes.” What follows is mainly a showcase for the star’s fast-talking. The supporting actors still do a good job playing off his humor, although this time they are more involved and not just passive bystanders! The story isn’t very deep, but that’s not really important – Prochnow provides enough of a threat, and there are still numerous dangerous situations where the characters predictably find themselves stuck and then manage to get out. It doesn't feel as original anymore; the personalities seem to be repeating themselves to some degree, but for a sequel, it holds onto much of the charm and fun from the initial fish-out-of-water dynamic that was effective earlier on. It’s not brilliant, but it’s an undemanding and enjoyable film to watch.
