Juliette Binoche portrays Marianne, a woman searching for employment following a failed marriage that has left her financially struggling. An employment agency suggests she take on work as a "domestic apparatus operator," essentially a low-wage cleaner. It’s demanding physical labor, to say the least. Over time, she adjusts and connects with other people in similar circumstances—particularly Cèdric (Didier Pupin), with whom she develops a friendly connection, and Chrystèle (Hélène Lambert, who delivers an impressive performance). Chrystèle helps Marianne secure a cleaning job on the ferry route between Portsmouth and Ouistreham, where they’re responsible for servicing the guest cabins – just 4 minutes per cabin! Having used this ferry myself before, it's at this point that the film's reality—and the genuinely difficult work done by these laborers—really starts to resonate. They share a sense of teamwork and solidarity which helps them navigate their challenging workplace. Lambert, along with Lèa Carne as Marilou and Evelyn Porée’s team leader Nadège, all contribute to showing just how much effort these people put in, and the small incomes they have to live on. Then, about halfway through, it's revealed that Marianne has a different purpose than what was initially presented, and any conflict arises from this realization by her colleagues, who must reconcile themselves with her true identity. Some approve of this while others view it as a betrayal. Binoche is believable in her role; the film offers a sharp criticism not only of employers who offer minimal wages but also of travelers and the public at large, who seem unable to perform basic tasks like flushing a toilet or cleaning up after themselves. It does feel slow-paced at times, and the conclusion feels both hurried and somewhat unsatisfactory—but as an examination of a particular employment environment that many people overlook, it's worth seeing.
