I don’t usually go for movies about teenagers, but I have to admit this film was entertaining. It tells the story of a young man left by his girlfriend—who it turns out never really liked him and just wanted to be with the most popular guy around—and who then decides to end his life. After some not-very-serious attempts, he manages to change things in an unexpected way. The movie is genuinely amusing, even if it’s as predictable as any other film aimed at teens. There's a snowy hill that they portray like it’s the Himalayas—they even gave it a name referencing a mountain range—and everyone seems really into skiing. That struck me as pretty ridiculous, to be honest. Then there’s this strange and unpleasant family living nearby; I wouldn't want them anywhere near my home. They look like a bunch of silly people, and I seriously question whether they ever shower. There are other quirky details too, but I won’t spoil them—it’s better to experience those for yourself. John Cusack delivers a solid performance. Even though he was still young, you could already see he had potential and knew how to capitalize on chances to develop his skills, and here he gives it his all. The rest of the actors aren't as impressive, mostly because their characters are just tired stereotypes. Diane Franklin is an exception thanks to a more interesting role and her own capable acting.
