I didn’t really buy this film. It's admirable that people managed to get *‘Better Luck Tomorrow’* made, especially considering it apparently got a significant boost from MC Hammer – that was quite surprising to learn! Nevertheless, I just didn't enjoy it. You can tell Justin Lin is a capable director, but the story and characters simply didn't resonate with me. I personally thought the plot stretched believability too far. I don’t mind watching things that are silly, but if they’re going to be like this, they need to be entertaining, and this wasn't. The performances weren't great either; even Sung Kang as Han didn't do it for me – he was the main reason I decided to watch it in the first place, because of the (tenuous) *‘The Fast and the Furious’* connection. Parry Shen felt disappointing; his narration was especially lifeless, although he is likeable enough. I just don't think Shen or his character were a good choice for the lead role. Jason Tobin as Virgil also became somewhat annoying (perhaps that was the point?), while Kang himself was surprisingly unremarkable; this version of Han bears little resemblance to the one from *F&F*, and it seems like a considerable leap to connect them, if I’m being honest. A quick glance at the Wikipedia page—which details some other interesting things about the production (Macaulay Culkin?! Big thanks to Lin for turning that down despite the money)—reveals that Sung Kang wanted to play Ben; now *that* could have been something! It obviously turned out better for him that he didn’t, but it's still a shame. Many people like this film—who am I to complain? Still, I'm pleased it was successful because without it, we probably wouldn't have Justin Lin directing the *F&F* franchise; *‘Fast & Furious’* and *‘Fast Five’* are my favorites, after the original. It’s good to finally see a film from him outside of that series, though.
