The initial name, 'Lumpy', seems unfortunate; the current title is much more fitting, even though it doesn’t entirely reflect what the movie is about. I watched this film some time after its release because the title initially suggested a lighthearted, perhaps low-quality comedy. To my surprise, it turned out to be one of the strongest films I saw from 2013. It's not simply a comedy as it’s categorized; instead, it’s a moving drama similar in tone to 'The Guilt Trip'. I really liked all of the performances—the acting was excellent across the board. However, the beginning gave the impression of a silly movie with shallow characters. As the story unfolded, though, many impressive storylines emerged and I found myself very impressed, particularly by how it resolved itself. The ending felt satisfyingly elevated compared to what one might expect. I believe praise is due both to the writer-director and to the actors involved. The narrative unfolds in two distinct layers, set in different cities, with one serving as a flashback that eventually converges with the present. This later development proved to be the film's strongest part; the second half significantly improved the overall quality. It’s not an exceptional movie, but considering its modest scale and lesser-known cast, it greatly exceeded my expectations. The suspense is skillfully built, and I don't believe most viewers will anticipate what happens. The tension remains until the very end, and those who appreciate melodrama are likely to find it especially enjoyable. Justin Long has been choosing some interesting smaller films recently, and this is one that film enthusiasts with diverse tastes should definitely check out. 7.5/10
