Nick (Alessandro Nivola) anticipates a financial windfall from his recently deceased father, but finds himself short on funds when he learns there’s nothing to receive. He agrees to work as a getaway driver in a heist intended to bring in $10,000, only to be confronted by the stern and uncompromising person who was robbed, and is now demanding $15,000 – or facing consequences. Nick and his girlfriend, Lissa (Reese Witherspoon), then devise an involved scheme to get the money from his affluent, well-meaning but not particularly bright friend Bryce (Josh Brolin) by falsely accusing him of rape. The story includes several unexpected developments, yet the performances and fairly unremarkable lines of conversation fail to create a feeling of either suspense or genuine engagement. Nivola doesn't demonstrate the acting ability needed to draw viewers into this somewhat absurd situation, and Witherspoon’s contribution is equally underwhelming as things move toward an especially foolish ending.
