A series of killings at a British circus prompts a Scotland Yard detective to launch an inquiry. Joan Crawford portrays the detached owner, with Ty Hardin as a tightrope walker, Diana Dors in a seductive role, and Judy Geeson as the proprietor’s daughter. “Berserk!” (1967) shares elements with “Circus of Horrors” (1960), but benefits from Crawford's presence; while I don’t particularly like her films, she undeniably possesses the magnetism to hold a movie together. It doesn’t have the impressive female ensemble seen in "Circus of Horrors," though it does introduce a couple of significant actresses as high-wire performers later on, plus Dors as Matilda, and Geeson is perfectly acceptable. Crawford was remarkably fit for a woman who was 62 years old during filming. Naturally, few viewers would accept that Hardin’s character felt any genuine attraction toward her; this can probably be attributed to greed. The film also boasts more impressive circus acts and animals than “Circus of Horrors,” likely because it utilized an actual circus for location shooting. There's some predictable melodrama present, but those who like films centered around circuses or carnivals—such as "The Greatest Show on Earth" (1952), "Roustabout” (1964), “Water for Elephants” (2011) and the previously mentioned “Circus of Horrors”—should find something to appreciate. The movie’s length is 1 hour, 36 minutes, and it was filmed at Shepperton Studios, west of London, along with Billy Smart Circus. GRADE: B
