The experience was overwhelming, though perhaps seeing it in 3D influenced my reaction; the standard version might have been preferable, but there’s no way to know for sure. Initially, it was genuinely impressive. I hadn’t previously encountered anything in 3D—I was too young when the initial wave of popular 3D films were released—but my father insisted this was something else entirely. He also claimed that it didn't make him feel quite as queasy, and occasionally I could see his point. The film arrived during the first surge of renewed interest in 3D technology, when it felt genuinely worthwhile. Even with the motion causing discomfort for my father, it was visually stunning. However, it remained excessive. The new technology itself was remarkable, but clearly hadn't been fully refined yet. It felt like a young teenager applying makeup without realizing that subtlety can be an asset. Less than thirty minutes in, I found myself completely lost; the 3D effects were so distracting that following the story proved impossible. Around an hour into the film, the 3D started to feel tedious and remained excessively disruptive. As I left, I felt like I'd witnessed something entirely new, a sensation that might permanently alter how I view movies in theaters...but I still wasn’t certain if I had actually watched a movie at all.
