It’s hard to understand why someone with Sean Connery’s credentials would agree to be in something like this. Drawing (in a superficial way) from the classic poem, the movie attempts to bring the tale into modern times—complete with public address systems—while still employing the clothing and armaments of its original setting. The central character saves a woman and then seeks shelter with Oliver Cotton’s “Hrothgar” in his stronghold; however, they are subsequently assaulted and eliminated one by one by the transforming "Grendel"—essentially a creature resembling "Puff" the magic dragon but with a rough voice. While the production values and visuals aren't completely awful, Lambert’s excessive makeup—including very bleached hair—and Rhona Mitra’s (“Kyra”) stiff acting contribute to the film’s awkward pace. The music seems to develop a life of its own, and what little dialogue exists does not meaningfully advance the plot about "doing what we have to do." Whatever else, stay until the end; it's unintentionally funny! This is a disappointing misuse of potentially strong material, and clearly isn't anyone’s best effort.
