Benny Loves You aims for awkward humor and manages about half the time. Director Karl Holt certainly captures the awkwardness, but he seems completely clueless when it comes to actual comedy – it's as if someone physically hit him with it, which is essentially what a woman does to her young daughter in an early scene (leaving a visible mark on the child’s face). The question is, why should that be considered funny? It appears the joke hinges on the fact that this woman previously sought advice online about whether striking a child is permissible. If you feel the need to look that up, maybe having children isn't the best idea. The main character, Jack, has a job at a toy company. He creates a toy with a name that unintentionally spells out AIDS; what follows is supposed to be funny, but it falls flat. It’s hard to imagine how something like this could even occur. Does Jack know how to spell? Can he read? Is he somehow oblivious to the meaning of AIDS? So far we have irresponsible parents and an illiterate toy designer; a trend appears where incompetence is intended to elicit laughter. If that were the case, Benny Loves You would be genuinely hilarious, given how poorly it's written. For example, Jack and a coworker named Richard are both trying to get promoted when Jack’s parents die in what looks like an accident from the Final Destination movies. Then we jump forward “10 months later,” and Jack and Richard are still battling for the same promotion. If neither of you has been given the job after nearly a year, perhaps it's time to accept that you won’t be getting it. Eventually in all this mess, Jack’s old stuffed animal Benny comes to life and starts killing people. Why? It's not explained. Perhaps he’s upset because his movements are as graceful as wet toilet paper. If Benny had any sense, he would end things himself, since he has absolutely nothing going for him – no personality, no reason for what he does, no logic behind it all. He lacks the charm of a Chucky voiced by Brad Dourif and the precision of a Puppet Master puppet. There’s no explanation for Benny; just a bewildered reaction.
