“Jess” (Parminder Nagra) and “Jules” (Keira Knightly) find themselves connected through a shared passion for football, but their mothers aren’t thrilled about it. With her sister’s wedding approaching and her own mother having married young at fifteen, "Jess" encounters considerable opposition from hers; meanwhile, “Jules” is trying to persuade her mom (Juliet Stevenson) that she won't become a lesbian with large thighs. That particular concern seems unlikely though, as both girls are attracted to coach "Connor" (Jonathan Rhys Meyers). As the girls’ team achieves greater success, they must balance their families’ objections, their personal lives, and their enjoyment of the sport—which is actually shown infrequently. There are occasional amusing scenes, but mostly this feels like a film about stereotypes, whether accurate or not, featuring some rather uninspired performances and suffering from unremarkable writing, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers appearing stiff as ever. It's also odd that it’s co-produced by BSkyB, yet they utilized the BBC's "Match of the Day" presentation team and legendary commentator John Motson to give the film a sense of authenticity. Overall, it’s an inoffensive diversion, potentially encouraging girls to participate in the sport and some parents to allow them, while also bringing back memories of “Brand Beckham” at its peak.
