As Ben (Lucas Hedges) enters his mother’s house on Christmas Eve, she shows her joy. Holly (Julia Roberts) and her daughter Ivy (Kathryn Newton) are aware he is struggling; he's a drug addict who has only managed seven days of sobriety. A pleasant Christmas celebration seems possible if he can maintain his abstinence, but his former dealer interferes, using the boy’s dog to lure him into one final job that sets off a frantic chase before something unfortunate occurs. The overall tone is quite somber, and neither Hedges nor Roberts are given much opportunity to shine beyond the disheartening theme of addiction. It might connect more deeply with viewers who have firsthand knowledge of the difficulties associated with substance abuse; the narrative does possess an authentic feel, reminiscent of television productions. However, there are numerous other stories about recovery—or lack thereof—that do a better job of explaining things to those without experience and offering a more helpful perspective – this one simply lands somewhere in the middle. I appreciate Hedges' natural talent, but here both actors deliver unremarkable performances in an unremarkable melodrama that doesn’t sufficiently explore the characters or the core themes of the story.
