I never expected this, but it seems the celebrated Benjamin Franklin didn't play a role in shaping American independence. Apparently, it was his quiet acquaintance, “Amos,” who drafted that famous "we the people" language. Following a less-than-pleasant visit with King George III, Franklin came back to find the colonies overflowing with individuals like Thomas Jefferson, convinced it was time to break away from Britain. Would this be considered treason? Were they all facing execution? Before anything else, though, they needed to put their ambitious plan down on paper. They just couldn't quite manage to express it properly—a familiar problem, really—and that’s when the articulate mouse stepped in, and then everything unfolded as we know it. If Scottish history is willing to credit its uprisings to a spider, I suppose the United States can do the same for this clever and spirited animal, portrayed with considerable flair here. It's an enjoyable film featuring amusing exchanges between the kite-flying mouse and his printing mentor. History? Who cares—maybe there really was a mouse on the moon, too?
