This is a truly lovely story about affection, connections, and the role of fantasy and imagination within them. It’s considerably more pleasant to experience—and better made, acting-wise and in its direction—than some other films exploring similar themes recently, even if those had different intentions, like Lars von Trier's *Nymphomaniac*. The film is strikingly beautiful visually, featuring excellent performances, particularly from Catherine Deneuve. Films from Bunuel’s 1960s and 70s are consistently worthwhile.
