John Chard on Bell, Book and Candle

5/10 · Dec 9, 2018

There are certain films that become personal disappointments—movies starring performers you genuinely like, but which stubbornly refuse to improve no matter how many viewings you endure, hoping for a change. *Bell Book & Candle* is one of those for me. With James Stewart and Kim Novak in the leading roles, alongside Jack Lemmon and Elsa Lanchester, this adaptation of the stage play possesses a certain appeal appropriate to its story about a publisher enchanted by a contemporary witch. However, it ultimately feels lifeless. The film is visually appealing, with attractive art direction and color photography. Stewart and Novak are agreeable as always, and Elsa Lanchester, Hermione Gingold, and even Pyewacket the cat provide moments of amusement. Still, it lacks genuine humor, and I just couldn't connect with the characters experiencing heartache or dissatisfaction. I have a framed photograph from this movie in my hallway; each time I walk by, I shake my head sadly. I appreciate the actors involved, but the film itself… 5/10
