I’m struggling to remember if I've actually seen "I Love Lucy" episodes or if I simply know the song; in any case, I was completely unfamiliar with Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz before viewing this movie. As is typical of his work, Aaron Sorkin provides dialogue that moves rapidly and has moments of sharpness, but the acting didn’t quite ignite a spark. Nicole Kidman is an adaptable performer—she seems capable of handling almost any role—but to truly succeed here, she would have benefited from a more believable counterpart. Javier Bardem doesn't seem right for the part. Their dynamic connection is hinted at rather than shown, and much of what made them beloved figures in American homes is simply accepted as fact. While their fame didn’t extend worldwide, there isn't enough effort to explain to those who aren’t familiar with them just how significant they were and why they achieved such popularity. J.K. Simmons does well portraying "Bill Frawley," and overall it's an acceptable biographical film; however, it felt more like a personal project for a filmmaker who was perhaps overly invested in the story, making assumptions about what audiences would already know. It’s visually appealing and offers a brief commentary on the anti-communist climate of the era, but ultimately lacks depth. I suspect a truly substantial and thorough drama could be made about this couple—just not with this film.
