The narrative does reach a resolution, yet it retains a sense of incompletion regarding its setting within the period following the Spanish Civil War. The film begins with "Miguel" (Gregory Peck) among a group of defeated republican fighters heading into French exile. Simultaneously, police captain "Viñolas" (Anthony Quinn) is devising strategies to lure him back. A chance arises when Miguel’s mother falls gravely ill, prompting attempts to reach out to him and persuade his return. The subsequent events form a touching story, brought to life by Peck, Omar Sharif as the priest "Francisco," and Raymond Pellegrin in the role of the young and vengeful "Carlos." Fred Zinnemann allows ample time for character development and exploration of their connections, highlighting manipulation, betrayal alongside themes of love, honor, and loyalty. Instances of police brutality and religious disagreements are present, and the script provides sufficient room for viewers to form their own judgments about what unfolds. Peck performed well in these types of solitary, introspective roles, as did Quinn portraying darker characters, making this a pleasant experience watching these two actors work with a dependable story.
