Owen Wilson portrays a pilot who’s grown weary of his duties on an American aircraft carrier and decides to leave. This decision upsets his superior officer. During his remaining two weeks, while conducting a reconnaissance flight over Bosnia, he's brought down, witnessing the death of his fellow pilot at the hands of soldiers acting outside the law. He then finds himself running for his life, hunted by a skilled marksman, as his unit attempts to locate and retrieve him. The film draws from actual events and delivers a fairly gripping chase with considerable danger and momentum. However, the casting choices detract from its overall quality. Wilson is adequate initially in conveying the pilot’s apathy, but struggles to carry the weight of the story once the action moves to the ground. Gene Hackman, as his commanding officer (Adm. Reigert), also seems underutilized, though he effectively embodies the determined "bring our man home" persona. The backdrop of genocide against the local population is prominently featured; given my exposure to news reports from that period of the largely overlooked Balkan conflict, the narrative retains a degree of impact. It’s an agreeable watch, but ultimately feels like a superficial treatment of a genuinely challenging circumstance.
