The performance from Edward Furlong, playing Jacob, is adequate, but generally this drama feels quite ordinary, struggling forward despite the presence of its two leading actors. After a young girl’s death, he becomes a suspect, prompting his father, Liam Neeson's character, to intervene by eliminating what appears to be incriminating proof. The subsequent trial follows predictable patterns as tensions arise within the family – between him, his dad, mom (Meryl Streep), and sister Julia Weldon's Judith. Alfred Molina is believable as the lawyer Demeris, who seems driven by a desire to win at any cost, but the story progresses very slowly toward an ending that left me feeling indifferent. It’s not offensively bad; everyone involved fulfills their roles, but the storyline wanders aimlessly far too often. The conversations and attempts at emotional moments lack impact, and the resolution simply repeats a question frequently posed by these kinds of dramas: why not just involve the police and let them handle things correctly?
