“Beetlejuice,” released in 1988 and helmed by Tim Burton, tells the story of a husband and wife (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) who die unexpectedly after relocating to a charming Connecticut town. They subsequently discover they must “haunt” their former home, attempting to frighten away the new owners (Jeffrey Jones and Catherine O'Hara), but their teenage daughter proves more intrigued than frightened (Winona Ryder). Michael Keaton portrays the chaotic "bio-exorcist," while Glenn Shadix appears as the new couple’s decorator. This marked Burton’s first film directorial effort, and the initial portion provides genuinely funny moments alongside some thought-provoking ideas about what happens after death. The movie starts strong, but I felt that the latter half lost some of its appeal, and ultimately found the central character to be irritating rather than entertaining. The film's length is 1 hour and 32 minutes; filming took place in East Corinth, Vermont, and Culver City, California. Writers include Michael McDowell, Larry Wilson, and Warren Skaaren. Grade: B+
