Winona Ryder portrays "Lydia," who earns a living through books and broadcasts about ghost hunting—a practice that draws the doubtful disapproval of her adolescent daughter, "Astrid" (Jenna Ortega). They must travel to attend the funeral of "Charlie," who was married to their mother/grandmother, "Delia" (Catherine O'Hara). Simultaneously, in the afterlife, "Delores" (Monica Belluci) has physically reassembled herself and is determined to reconnect with her husband (Michael Keaton), though he seems less than eager about it. Fortunately, young "Astrid" encounters the appealing "Jeremy" (Arthur Conti), inadvertently opening a gateway to the spirit realm, which prompts her mother to rush around attempting to save her from everlasting torment while a scheming individual attempts to exploit this situation to avoid his severe wife, who is leaving a progressively horrifying path of destruction for TV detective "Wolf" (Willem Dafoe) to investigate. Numerous entertaining events unfold as this swiftly moving film weaves these storylines together, but I ultimately felt that the whole thing lacked something. It’s like an "Addams Family" movie that feels overly complicated and doesn't give enough screen time to Keaton or Dafoe, while featuring too much of Ortega’s usual teenage persona—something Hades likely wouldn't have approved of. The film does improve considerably toward the conclusion with assistance from a large cake and the soothing voice of Richard Harris—it was wonderful to hear that in cinema sound once more; however, aside from O'Hara’s memorable performance, this didn’t really make me want to mention his name, let alone three times. It is acceptable but lacks energy.
