It’s hard to believe we’re in 2024, because films like this are now receiving top marks—a perfect score—when twenty or thirty years ago they might have only earned a middling grade. The positive aspect is that, aside from a passing reference to Climate Change, it avoids political commentary and doesn't feel preachy. There’s no attempt to make the viewers feel bad about their identity or beliefs; instead, it simply aims to provide entertainment—something I found quite welcome. To be frank, I think Jenna Ortega could believably play Winona Ryder's daughter. I realize there are racial differences, but from a personality standpoint, the casting felt ideal, particularly for her character’s child within the Beetlejuice universe. It was an excellent choice; Ortega doesn’t perfectly replicate Ryder’s demeanor from the original film, but she comes close enough that I accepted it without question. Still, some editing would have improved things considerably. Bellucci's storyline should have been removed entirely; she didn't add anything of value. Dafoe’s scenes needed to be reworked to exclude his dialogue with Bellucci. The narrative ought to have concentrated solely on Ortega and Ryder alongside the Deetz family. The movie attempted to juggle too many different threads, which prevented me from feeling truly connected to any of them. Nevertheless, viewed through a 2024 lens, it’s an enjoyable film when compared with all the politically charged movies being produced these days.
