This film shares a lot in common with "Mary Poppins" (1964), employing a comparable mix of live-action and animated segments to recount a narrative that carries a slightly darker tone. Following the evacuation of three children from London during World War II’s Blitz, they find themselves under the care of “Miss Price” (Angela Lansbury), who is portrayed as unusual and seemingly resistant to the arrangement. The situation improves for everyone when the children uncover that she's learning witchcraft, and their encounters with "Emelius" (David Tomlinson) lead them on escapades using a magical bed to locate a missing component of a spell related to transportation—a spell which may have the potential to hinder the Nazis. Like “Poppins,” the songs and music are by the Sherman twins, although some might find this soundtrack less memorable, with "Beautiful Briny" and "Portobello Road" standing out as highlights. Lansbury and Tomlinson’s performances complement each other nicely; Lansbury is particularly good at embodying a character who appears proper but possesses a spirited and playful side as an aspiring witch. The younger actors are also commendable, notably “Paul” (Roy Snart), who fiercely guards the controls for the bed! Several recognizable faces contribute to keeping the story moving along smoothly, and while the animations aren't as plentiful as I would have preferred, they integrate seamlessly into some amusing action sequences—particularly towards the film’s conclusion—resulting in a pleasant, uplifting movie suitable for families.
