Drawing from two autobiographies—Beautiful Boy and Tweak—Felix Van Groeningen's emotional film depicts the bond between David (Steve Carell) and Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) as they both confront Nic’s battle with drug addiction. There seem to be countless reasons to watch this movie: first, nearly every performer has received an Academy Award nomination (with the exception of Maura Tierney, who boasts a Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations); second, Timothée Chalamet; third, the source memoirs are truly remarkable (and reasonably priced on Amazon, allowing viewers to familiarize themselves beforehand); fourth, it creates a chance for a sort-of Office get-together featuring Carell and Amy Ryan, who previously played Holly Flax. However, what I think is the most important—and easily missed—reason is that director Felix Van Groeningen’s 2012 film The Broken Circle Breakdown stands as one of the greatest films ever made (and can be found to stream on Amazon, a company I definitely don't have any affiliation with). The tension is palpable.
