It's simply marvelous, truly marvelous. Gary Cooper, Ray Milland, and Robert Preston portray three orphaned brothers raised at Brandon Abbas by their aunt, Lady Patricia Brandon. Financial difficulties arise for the family, drawing attention to the Blue Water Sapphire, which represents the estate’s remaining assets. When the sapphire vanishes and is presumed stolen, the brothers escape the resulting scandal and subsequently join the Foreign Legion. It's there, at Fort Zinderneuf, that they meet the cruel Sgt. Markoff and are put through trials of courage, honor, and loyalty. Beau Geste stands as a genuine classic film, skillfully directed by William A. Wellman; it brings together all the necessary ingredients for broad appeal. The story includes heroes and villains, action sequences, potential mutiny, and an underlying mystery—all contributing to what is a fantastic adventure. The cast delivers strong performances, with particular praise due to Brian Donlevy’s portrayal of the menacing Markoff, who embodies a truly frightening and bullying character. Susan Hayward also deserves recognition for her early role in the film. The art direction by Hans Dreier & Robert Odell earned a well-deserved Academy Award nomination, and Alfred Newman's score integrates perfectly with the film’s shifting narrative. There are so many delightful scenes to appreciate; seeing the children playing as Admirals is particularly charming and effectively prepares us for the film’s emotionally charged final act—a brilliant storytelling technique that contrasts youthful innocence with unwavering devotion. Likewise, the sequences at Fort Zinderneuf, where the brothers have grown into men but still carry the weight of their past secrets, create a captivating viewing experience as they face various challenges. As it was made in 1939, the film doesn’t explore the reasons behind the conflict; the Tuaregs are simply portrayed as antagonists. However, to be overly critical would be unfair because Beau Geste is an important and influential action-adventure film—it's a Beautiful Gesture indeed. It earns a rating of 9/10.
