The story in Beat The Devil centers on a group of four disparate individuals who are scheming to acquire uranium from British East Africa with the goal of making money through a real estate transaction arranged by Bogart's character, Billy Dannreuther. The narrative opens at an Italian port where Bogie and his wife, Maria—portrayed by Gina Lollobrigida—are anticipating the arrival of those four criminals: Philip Morley as Peterson, Peter Lorre as Julius O’Hara, Ivor Barnard as Maj. Jack Ross, and Marco Tulli as Ravello. Their plan is to then set sail for Africa. During this wait, they encounter a British couple also traveling on the same vessel, Edward Underdown and Jennifer Jones, who play Harry and Gwendolyn Chelm. The ship's captain is shown to be a drunkard, and the vessel itself appears to be old and rundown, complete with a malfunctioning oil pump.
