Beast stands out as a truly beautiful and rewarding film this year. The filmmakers chose to shoot most scenes without cuts, which really showcases the beauty of the African landscape and allows viewers to connect with the characters more effectively. The resulting atmosphere creates considerable suspense and anxiety; the encounters with the lion are quite violent—and Idris Elba gives what is arguably one of his finest performances. While it adheres to a familiar plot structure for survival stories, some aspects require acceptance as fiction. The visual effects also deserve recognition for their realism.
