This film has a few moments that feel unsettling, but mostly it’s truly awful! Idris Elba ("Nate") shows up with his daughters "Mer" (Iyana Halley) and "Norah" (Leah Jeffries) at a secluded African game reserve managed by his friend "Martin" (Sharlto Copley). It doesn't take long before we understand that the items they brought on the plane represent only a fraction of the emotional weight this family carries, and we’re quickly drawn into an unpleasant story about his deceased wife who died unexpectedly (it’s best to see this film with low expectations). While on a guided tour, they find out something is wrong—a massive lion is seeking revenge against people after poachers wiped out its pride. This lion, taking what it wants, soon decides to make these tourists into a meal—but can they survive long enough for assistance? Elba has difficulty maintaining a consistent performance with his somewhat unnecessary American accent; the two girls are simply irritating, and I quickly found myself rooting for the lion. Strangely (or luckily for the story), this enormous animal lacks a sense of smell, so "Nate" and his kids seem to narrowly escape death repeatedly. They take refuge in an old school—leaving all the doors wide open for added safety; they exit and enter their land cruiser without much thought for their well-being, armed with little more than a pocketknife. The conversations are passable—mostly because they repeat the same phrases: "Are you OK?" "Are You OK?". The final scenes are just ridiculous—they actually brought back memories of my childhood enjoyment of "Daktari" (1966) combined with one of those semi-educational Disney movies that mixed real footage into a fictional narrative. It's brief, only ninety minutes long, but the action is frequently overshadowed by the uninspired family drama that’s just boring. Not anyone's best effort, I'm afraid.
