Jessie Buckley gives a notably powerful performance within what turns out to be a fairly standard thriller. She portrays "Moll," a woman experiencing dissatisfaction with her life while living under the constant observation of her mother, "Hilary" (Geraldine James). Moll begins a relationship with "Pascal" (Johnny Flynn - or perhaps Tom Burke?), and many in their island community believe he may be responsible for several killings that have caused considerable disruption. As she becomes increasingly isolated from her family and acquaintances, she gets drawn into the police inquiry spearheaded by "Harrison" (Oliver Maltman), who also shows interest in Moll. Gradually, like the audience, she starts to question the trustworthiness of her boyfriend’s questionable nature. The resolution feels appropriate, but I have to say that the majority of the film felt too formulaic; the expected conflicts within a family didn't resonate with me. Buckley is exceptional and James consistently lends weight to her scenes, however, the rest of the production failed to impress and left me feeling rather detached. Perhaps it was simply bad timing on my part, but this didn’t make much of an impact at all.
