I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this film, and each time I struggle to recall what happens at the close. This is likely due to the lengthy introduction being rather tedious and lacking energy. It boasts a prominent cast, yet the overall effect falls short of what one might expect from such talent. Richard Widmark portrays "Otto," leading a team of researchers on the island—formerly a Nazi submarine base. We quickly learn that a submerged U-boat contains something that would appeal to fans of "Goldfinger"—and someone within the group is set on obtaining it, even as their coworkers begin to die off. The snowy scenery does create an unsettling atmosphere for this Alistair MacLean adventure, but the performances feel disconnected. Vanessa Redgrave’s portrayal of “Dr. Lindquist” features a questionable accent, and Donald Sutherland seems to be playing a lighthearted character reminiscent of Errol Flynn as "Lansing," until the film descends, somewhat stiffly, into an ending that proves rather unsatisfying. The core narrative is strong—there's ample deception in the vein of “Ice Station Zebra" (1968)—and suspicion permeates everything. However, director Don Sharp fails to capitalize on this uncertainty or the feeling of confinement created by their harsh surroundings; instead, he seems to depend too heavily on the star power of a cast that is past its prime, and as a result, the film ultimately disappoints.
