The movie *Baywatch* has occasional bright spots, but ultimately feels underwhelming. As a comedy, it occasionally gets bogged down in being overly earnest. The attempts at genuine emotion don’t quite connect, and much of the humor seems to depend heavily on suggestive jokes. The storyline is easy to grasp, although entirely foreseeable. There are too many characters; the cast feels bloated. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron deliver acceptable performances as Mitch and Matt, respectively. Summer (Alexandra Daddario) and Victoria (Priyanka Chopra) aren't bad, but their characters lack depth, as does Stephanie’s (Ilfenesh Hadera). C. J. (Kelly Rohrbach) and Ronnie (Jon Bass), however, are irritating and seem to serve no real purpose. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is dependable in a brief appearance as Ellerbee. Since I'm not familiar with the original television show, I might have missed some references—though there are two noticeably contrived appearances from it. If the film had remained focused on being a straightforward comedy, perhaps I would have enjoyed it more; unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. It isn’t awful, but I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to see it.
