Baywatch is a film inspired by the well-known television series that helped launch the careers of actors like Yasmine Bleeth and Pamela Anderson, though their success didn't last long. The show ran for about eleven years, and an interesting detail is that Jason Momoa appeared in the spin-off Baywatch: Hawaii. The movie closely resembles the original TV show; if you go in expecting a serious story, you’re already misinterpreting it. The rescue situations are just as silly and unbelievable, and the central plot becomes more complicated and predictable than any typical day for real lifeguards. Like 21 Jump Street and several other television-to-film adaptations, this one attempts to poke fun at everything, including all of the slow-motion beach running. It doesn't quite reach the comedic heights of Jump Street, and frankly, it wasn’t really necessary. I mean, didn’t the show already do enough self-mockery? But my main takeaway is that it could have been far worse. I’m not claiming this is the best film released this summer, and I'm honestly unsure if I would even call it a good movie. However, it’s easy to watch, and the humor, while not exceptional, is consistent throughout. Where the script falters, the cast manages to make fun of themselves. Dwayne Johnson plays the serious-minded leader, while Zac Efron portrays the self-centered, attractive new trainee who clashes with him. They have plenty of jokes for each other that land with varying degrees of success. There’s a heavier lifeguard character, and the movie delivers the expected jokes, but actor Jon Bass also demonstrates some comedic talent reminiscent of Josh Gad. In fact, he might even be funnier than Gad. The point is, he's genuinely funny in this film. The movie includes several crude jokes, but one scene involving this character could be considered embarrassing, though it doesn’t quite reach the level of "There's Something About Mary." Hannibal Burress also appears for a brief cameo, and I always enjoy those appearances. It’s time for Burress to have his own starring role, though. The female characters aren’t as funny, but they do provide some good support for the action. Alexandra Daddario has proven herself to be a capable actress on several occasions, and the other women don't just seem like eye candy. Priyanka Chopra is also present as the villain, and she does an adequate job. Overall, the movie can best be described as passable. It’s amusing, doesn't take itself seriously, and the cast seems willing to play along. You don’t have to see it, but if you do, be aware that sequels are already in development.
