I found myself enjoying this film, mainly due to its impressive visuals. The special effects are really well done, the alien designs are intriguing, and there’s a lot of explosive action happening throughout. While the aliens' methods of destruction weren’t exactly sensible, I appreciated those neat rolling “balls” they were using. It was also a treat to see the "Mighty Mo" in play; it’s disappointing that these incredible floating fortresses are no longer around. My enjoyment really stemmed from the visual elements though. Liam Neeson is usually good, but most of the rest of the movie didn't reach a comparable level. The plot felt like standard Hollywood fare, and there were some pretty glaring gaps in its logic—big enough to fit an entire warship through. For example, if these aliens can travel vast distances across space, why couldn’t they avoid bumping into a satellite orbiting Earth? Really. Things went downhill from there when the Missouri appeared. I could overlook the idea that a small group of veterans wouldn't be able to get such a ship operational. I could even accept that the movie glossed over how long it would take to bring the ship online, even with a full crew and ideal conditions. But what really frustrated me was the scene where they dropped anchor to make a sharp turn, essentially sliding the ship across the water. Seriously? How clueless can Hollywood producers, scriptwriters, and directors be? I’m being generous now; if those who wrote that scene aren't complete fools, then they must think the audience are equally gullible, which would be even worse. That single moment cost the film two stars in my estimation. Despite that, I still rated it a 6 out of 10 because the visual effects and naval battles were so entertaining.
