SierraKiloBravo on Battle: Los Angeles

_Battle: Los Angeles_ arrived in 2011, and according to Wikipedia, it’s classified as a “military science fiction apocalyptic action film.” That's quite a combination of genres, but surprisingly, they manage to make it work. The official synopsis explains the plot like this: _The Earth is under attack by an unidentified force. As cities around the world crumble, Los Angeles becomes humanity's final defense in a conflict nobody predicted. A Marine staff sergeant and his new unit must establish a line of resistance against an enemy they’ve never seen before._ I watched this one in theaters when it was first released, and my enjoyment hasn’t diminished with a second viewing. What I believe sets it apart is that while fundamentally a science fiction film about an alien invasion, its structure closely resembles a war movie. Similar to _Monsters: Dark Continent_ and _Dog Soldiers_, it's a soldier story featuring aliens, rather than an alien story incorporating soldiers—a significant distinction. The cast includes recognizable actors like Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Pena, and a noticeably younger Joey King. Everyone performs well, but the film isn’t driven by star power; instead, it prioritizes intense action sequences. The narrative is straightforward: their initial objective is to reach a police station and rescue civilians. The journey there involves urban combat reminiscent of videos seen online from various international conflicts, except this time it's taking place in America within a familiar cityscape. The story then transitions into a search-and-destroy mission, culminating in an action-filled conclusion. Contributing to the overall sense of disorder is the filmmakers’ decision to keep the enemy largely obscured—a choice that enhances the suspense. This is a perfect film for switching off your mind and enjoying a fast-paced movie with plenty to hold your attention from beginning to end.
