Wuchak on Battle in Seattle

6/10 · Dec 11, 2025

I wasn't aware there had been a confrontation in Seattle until I learned it referred to the demonstrations that disrupted the 1999 World Trade Organization (WTO) summit, which took place from November 30th to December 3rd. Given my dislike for protestors who obstruct roadways, I delayed watching this docudrama; its failure at the box office didn't encourage me. Despite my initial hesitation, the film manages to educate viewers about the WTO, providing more specifics toward the end concerning what was coming, and writer/director Stuart Townsend skillfully weaves in actual footage from the event throughout. The fictional elements also unexpectedly draw you in, despite their lack of depth. Woody Harrelson leads the cast as a hardened police officer with a shaved head, while Charlize Theron portrays his pregnant wife. Ray Liotta appears as the mayor facing intense pressure, and Connie Nielsen takes on the role of a journalist who begins to feel empathy for the protestors, who are portrayed by Martin Henderson, André Benjamin, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jennifer Carpenter. Ultimately, this is an engaging production featuring a strong cast that effectively chronicles a significant moment in American history; Stuart Townsend deserves recognition for it. However, it's limited by the reality that most people today simply aren’t interested in what they consider tiresome protestors. Why don’t they find something useful to do and contribute? The film has a running time of 1 hour and 38 minutes and was filmed in Seattle during November-December 2006. GRADE: B-
