I have to say, I did find myself enjoying this one. "Batman" (George Clooney) and "Robin" (Chris O'Donnell) are in a hurry to get downtown to "Gotham" to stop "Mr. Fries"—that is, freeze, not French—(Arnold Schwarzenegger) from stealing diamonds while he causes trouble trying to discover a way to heal his wife, who’s been kept alive in suspended animation because of an illness. Simultaneously, “Bruce Wayne” attends another company charity event – this time it's for a massive telescope – where he meets "Dr. Isley" (Uma Thurman), who insists that he assist her with stopping humanity from ruining the planet. He is agreeable but explains that providing food and resources to people is his priority, so she decides to act on her own. She gets assistance in this endeavor from her grandiose companion, "Dr. Woodrue," and they have a disagreement that results in her gaining a new one-word henchman named "Bane" (Jeep Swenson) along with some abilities to control nature's forces. The stage is set for her using these newfound talents to make nearly everyone develop feelings for her and joining forces with “Fries” so they can both destroy “Batman.” Meanwhile, back at "Wayne" manor, the butler "Alfred" (Michael Gough) begins experiencing symptoms of the same ailment that’s affecting “Mrs. Fries,” but his visiting niece, “Barbara” (Alicia Silverstone), seems to be much more than just a quiet student. Can some of them band together to save the butler and perhaps even the day? There's a lot happening in this film, and while it borrows heavily from other sources throughout, I felt that Thurman and Arnie seemed to be having a good time with this silly project, and that feeling comes across as he delivers his lightly-poetic lines about the "Bat-tenburg" while demonstrating the real destructive potential of ice when wielded by a heavily CGI-equipped silver madman. It does go on for a bit, the action sequences are somewhat repetitive, and polystyrene seems to play just as important a role as any of the actors, but I found it more entertaining than those films that tried to drown us in the psychoanalysis and flashback-driven darkness often associated with the caped crusader. It's not a great film, certainly, but it’s also not awful. Ultimately, it’s just over-the-top fun.
