This Batman comic feels like an odd concept—Batman reimagined in a Japanese style—and ultimately doesn’t quite succeed. Certain redesigns are successful; the Joker and Two-Face look fantastic. However, most of the others feel uninspired and only function within the context of the setting itself. Nightwing's new appearance is essentially just his current design, and Red Robin’s alterations seem minimal, as if they barely bothered to update him from his modern Gotham incarnation to fit ancient Japan. The story's downfall for me came down to elements like Voltron; those moments felt jarringly strange—too overtly manga or anime, and not enough like Batman. It was disappointing because a character like Batman seems ideally suited for Japanese comics more than many others, so seeing it fall short in this way was frustrating.
