This horror movie, “Basket Case,” released in 1982, tells a darkly humorous story about conjoined twins separated and seeking retribution in New York City. Duane Bradley (Kevin Van Hentenryck), a young man from upstate, makes his way to the less desirable areas of Manhattan, carrying a strange wicker basket and searching for two doctors with questionable reputations. The film is a very graphic, low-budget horror offering that manages to be genuinely funny thanks to its understated comedic elements. The special effects are simple, utilizing rubber puppets and gloves alongside some stop-motion animation not authorized by Ray Harryhausen. Terri Susan Smith stands out as Duane’s possible romantic interest, Sharon, while Beverly Bonner delivers a spirited performance as Casey, the friendly neighbor he meets at his hotel. I found the movie enjoyable enough to understand why it has gained a following, but the emphasis on Manhattan's darker side makes for a somewhat unpleasant viewing experience. It is still fascinating to see New York City as it was in 1981. Some critics dismiss “Basket Case” as being poorly made, however, considering its budget of only $35,000—roughly equivalent to $100,000 today—that seems harsh. The film’s length is 1 hour and 31 minutes, and it was filmed in Manhattan with some additional scenes shot in Glens Falls, New York. GRADE: B-
