Despite the arguments surrounding Sharon Stone’s undeniably alluring and darkly stylish character—a real alpha female, to be sure—and the criticism that the film depicted lesbians as unstable, Verhoeven paid homage to Sir Alfred Hitchcock, specifically *Vertigo*, and maintained his established narrative approach from his early career in the Netherlands. It's not something discussed by the actors or director, but the exciting car sequence felt reminiscent of the one in *Bullitt*. Considering how beautiful the scenery is, though, it seems sensible to stretch stylistic boundaries as much as possible within censorship limits. This is a film that would have earned the respect of The Master of Suspense, and maybe even something he might have created himself if he’d had Joe Eszterhas' entertaining script during his more playful period, like with *Frenzy*. It’s also a great choice for a night out.
