Louisa Moore - Screen Zealots on Barber Westchester

6/10 · Apr 23, 2023

Those who enjoy lesser-known animated movies should seek out “Barber Westchester,” an unusual and charming work by artist Jonni Phillips Phillips. Her artistic style is pleasing, and she prioritizes imaginative expression over flawless execution (for example, characters are often drawn with many uneven lines). This feature-length animated film is original, distinctive, and funny, providing a surreal and experimental experience for viewers who value unconventional artistry. The story introduces Barber Westchester (voiced by Chris Kim), a young astronomer who secures an internship at NASA. On his first day, he discovers that space isn't real, and NASA’s only function is to maintain the deception. It’s a straightforward concept supporting a more elaborate film that considers themes of existence, faith, and the desire for connection. Barber has a group of oddball friends and a father who leads a religious sect, and the movie follows part of his life story as everyone tries their best. The film occasionally feels like it was made up as it went along, which doesn’t always mesh well with the overall storytelling; characters appear seemingly at random, and numerous notions are explored without much direction. There's considerable activity both visually and narratively (including peculiar musical sequences featuring original songs), and no definitive resolution is presented. Some might say that’s intentional, but it does give the impression that the film runs longer than necessary. It’s impressive to see a movie with hand-drawn animation, and “Barber Westchester” displays the artist's skill, personal style, and inventive thinking. Her work isn’t elaborate or refined, and Phillips completed this project without studio backing. Because of this, it is genuinely independent, revealing her distinctive perspective through her artwork. And there’s a great deal to appreciate about that.
